Vie et oeuvre de l'artiste Fluxus...

Kaprow's artistic development was strongly influenced by his efforts to reconcile the achievements of Jackson Pollock and John Cage. His essay  The Legacy of Jackson Pollock  (1958) reveals his vivid understanding of Pollock's significance as a  liberator  who demonstrated to subsequent generations the primacy of action in the process of artistic creation. Kaprow began to engage with Pollock's work in the late 1940s, in part through his study of painting with Hans Hofmann. In 1952, he and some of Hofmann's other former students, including Jan Müller, Jane Wilson, George Segal, and Robert Whitman, cofounded Hansa Gallery, an artists'

cooperative on East Twelfth Street in New York, to provide a forum to explore the legacies of gestural abstraction, assemblage, and others forms. They hoped to find an escape from abstract expressionism, which had degenerated into a mode of art-making that, Kaprow claimed,  invariably seeks the past and drowns itself in its sobs, bitterness and fastidiousness.
