En Résumé :

Catalogue de l'exposition du Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam (Avril-Sept.2009).

The Van Gogh Museum holds the largest collection of works by Emile Bernard and Odilon Redon in the Netherlands. They were assembled by the Amsterdam insurance broker Andries Bonger (1861-1936), Theo van Gogh's friend and brother-in-law. During the many years he spent in Paris, where he also met Vincent van Gogh, Bonger developed a great love of modern French art. He began collecting on his return to the Netherlands in 1892, concentrating primarily on the work of his close friends Emile Bernard and Odilon Redon.

Bonger compiled a representative selection of Bernard's work from different periods and in diverse techniques: paintings, prints and drawings, tapestries and a mirror frame. His collection of works by Redon included the artist's complete graphic oeuvre, early charcoal drawings, colourful paintings and intriguing pastels. He also bought paintings by other contemporaries including Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Paul Cézanne. In 1907 Bonger decided that his collection was complete. From that point onwards only a select few were privileged to enter his secluded world and view his collection. It was a hidden treasure that enjoyed a great reputation within a very small circle and remained so after his death. In 1996 the Kingdom of the Netherlands acquired a significant part of the collection from Bonger's heirs and placed the works on permanent loan in the Van Gogh Museum. This book describes how Andries Bonger put together his collection. All of the works in the original collection are reunited here for the first time.
