Jean Dubuffet (Le Havre, 1901 - Parigi 1985), the genial inventor of a revolutionary form of expression that became history with the name of  art brut , is one of the major protagonists of European art of the last century. His works show the consciousness of the existential crisis of modern man, a common element in many artists of the post-war period, and his art is always balanced by the humour and ludic spirit characterizing his personality. Meditation, lyrical bursts, provocations and desecration are fused into materic elaborations often in the form of children drawings or rough graffiti inspired to the popular world and daily reality. This book runs through the first production of Jean Dubuffet and presents the works of the rich collection that the artist donated in 1967 at the Musée des Arts Décoratifs of Paris. A particular attention is devoted to the cycle of Hourloupe, the maximum expression of Dubuffet's creative genius: a whole formal universe originates mid-way between nature and culture, inspired to the world of cells and organic tissues.
